Madonna has spoken out in defence of her fellow pop star Britney Spears, putting troubled behaviour down to the fact that she lived her childhood in the public eye.
Britney had an agent at the age of eight and was appearing in America's The New Mickey Mouse Club from 11 onwards.
Madonna, who duetted with Britney on the 2003 hit Me Against the Music and shared a lingering kiss with her at the MTV Video Music Awards that year, said that she sympathised with the Gimme More hit-maker because she was "never allowed to have a childhood".
Speaking to the BBC, Madonna said: "She didn't get to grow up and make mistakes privately.
"She's been under a microscope since she was a teenager, which I think is really tough, it's hard to evolve that way."
Madonna, who is soon to turn 50, made a headlining appearance at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Maidstone at the weekend.
