Winehouse promises to play Mandela gig

Amy Winehouse is determined to play at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday celebrations on Friday, despite being diagnosed with a serious lung disease.

The troubled soul singer, who won five Grammy awards this year for her second album Back to Black, was found to have traces of emphysema - which causes sufferers to struggle for breath.

Despite this, the sickly star left hospital yesterday to attend rehearsals for the concert - which will also feature Queen, Leona Lewis, Annie Lennox and the Soweto gospel choir - before returning later that day on doctor's advice.

A source close to Amy told the Daily Mail: "Amy doesn't want to cancel - it's keeping her going. She begged the doctors to let her out to rehearse.

"She went into the studio for a few hours and sang her heart out. She sounded amazing. No matter what else is happening in her life, Amy can still turn it on."

It is thought that the 24-year-old singer, whose battle with drugs has been well documented, should recover fully from the disease as long as she does not continue smoking.
