American Idol star Jennifer Hudson was chosen to star in the forthcoming Sex and the City movie in order to appeal to both young and black fans alike, according to Sarah Jessica Parker.
The actress, who plays Carrie Bradshaw in the hit show, explained that the film's director Michael Patrick King was keen to cater to the tastes of a large cross section of the audience.
Oscar winner Jennifer will star as Carrie's assistant in the highly-anticipated new film.
SJP explained: "First of all we needed to have a 20-year-old in this movie; we really have to remember that there is a significant audience now that are very, very young.
"It's a great way of reminding people who Carrie was when she came to New York; what was New York, what did it mean to her...And African-American women and women of colour have been a big part of our audience for a long time and we really haven't been responsible to them."
SJP added that she often felt dwarfed by Jennifer, who she described as being "remarkably beautiful" and about eight inches taller than her.
